Soraya Shaw started taking piano lessons
at age four from her beloved grandmother, who was a composer, pianist, and music teacher.
Around age eleven, Soraya started playing flute and studying classical voice. She became
interested in jazz through the influence of her older brother Alex, a jazz trumpet player.
Soraya was graduated from
Saint Louis University, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in Fine & Performing Arts. She studied classical voice with Dr. Jeral Becker, John Stewart, Maria Stephanides, and Elizabeth Mannion. Her vocal recitals included works by Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, Duparc, and Faure.
Soraya has performed and toured with the Muny, America's oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre. She has sung works by Bach with the American Kantorei under the baton of J.S. Bach specialist and founding director, Robert Bergt. She has been featured in productions under the direction of internationally renowned opera director, Colin Graham.
An accomplished vocalist and educator, Soraya is currently teaching over 25 private piano, voice, and flute students from her home studio in the Los Angeles area. She has recently released her debut jazz album, Daydreams, which receives airplay on jazz stations such as KKJZ 88.1 FM and WSIE 88.7 FM. Soraya regularly performs jazz in Southern California venues including Kikuya in Huntington Beach, Steamers in Fullerton, and Lunaria in West L. A., and does occasional tours and concerts in other areas of the country as well.
