Bio

Soraya Shaw started taking piano lessons at age four from her beloved grandmother, who was a composer, pianist, and music teacher. Around age eleven, Soraya started playing flute and studying classical voice. She became interested in jazz through the influence of her older brother, a jazz trumpet player.

Soraya was graduated from Saint Louis University, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in Fine & Performing Arts. She had post graduate studies at the Vocal Institute, U.C. - Santa Barbara under the direction of Elizabeth Mannion.  She studied classical voice with Elizabeth Mannion, Dr. Jeral Becker, John Stewart and Maria Stephanides. Her vocal recitals included works by Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, Faure and Duparc.

Soraya has performed and toured with the Muny, America's oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre, under the direction of Tony nominated director, Paul Blake. She has sung works by Bach with the American Kantorei under the baton of J.S. Bach specialist and founding director, Robert Bergt. She has been featured in productions under the direction of internationally renowned opera director, Colin Graham.  She has also released acclaimed jazz vocal album, Daydreams, which has received airplay on jazz stations such as KKJZ 88.1 FM and WSIE 88.7 FM.

Soraya has performed jazz in Southern California venues which include Kikuya Jazz Club in Huntington Beach, Steamers in Fullerton, Lunaria in West L. A., La Cave in Costa Mesa, the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles and the Long Beach Museum of Art. She has done occasional tours and concerts in other areas of the country as well.

An experienced and accomplished music educator, Soraya Shaw is currently teaching private piano, voice, and flute to students of all ages from her home studio in the greater Los Angeles area.
